The Tragic Death of an 18-Year-Old Mexican Boxer – What Went Wrong?
An 18-year-old boxer, Jeanette Zacarias Zapata, stepped into the ring in Montreal on August 28, 2021, hoping to advance her career. What unfolded instead was a tragedy that could have been prevented. Just months after suffering a severe concussion in Mexico, she faced another brutal fight, one that would cost her life.
Investigations have now revealed a disturbing reality—falsified medical records, ignored warning signs, and a system that failed to protect her.
A Fight That Should Have Never Happened
During the fourth round of a six-round bout, Zacarias Zapata took a series of heavy blows, including a powerful left uppercut followed by a right hook. She collapsed into convulsions, lying unconscious in the ring as her trainer, paramedics, and a ringside doctor rushed to help. She never recovered. Five days later, she was pronounced dead at Sacré-Coeur-de-Montréal Hospital.

Instagram | supremeboxing | Zacarias Zapata suffered a knockout in the fourth round, collapsing unconscious after a series of heavy blows.
Her death was later linked to Second Impact Syndrome (SIS)—a condition where a second head injury occurs before a previous one has fully healed. Shockingly, just three months before this fatal fight, she had suffered a knockout-induced concussion in her home country. Medical experts agree that she should never have been cleared to fight again so soon.
Forged Medical Reports and Falsified Clearances
Documents that authorized Zacarias Zapata to fight in Montreal have now been exposed as fraudulent. A radiology report claimed she was in perfect health, yet the investigation uncovered that the clinic listed on the document was closed on the date it was supposedly issued. The radiologist who signed the report? She does not exist in official records.
This document, however, was approved by Quebec’s fight-sanctioning authority, the Régie des alcools, des courses et des jeux (RACJ), allowing the fight to proceed. The oversight raised serious concerns about the process used to verify medical clearances for athletes.
Parents Left in Shock
Zacarias Zapata’s parents were devastated when they learned the truth. “We trusted that she was being taken care of,” her mother, Irene Zapata, said in an emotional interview. “Now we know that the system failed her.”
Her father, Esteban Zacarias, expressed disbelief. “How could this happen? How could they let her fight when she wasn’t healthy?” The family had no idea that their daughter’s medical clearance was based on fraudulent paperwork.
The Role of the Boxing Commission
Before traveling to Montreal, Zacarias Zapata was seen by Dr. Juan Carlos Sanchez, a physician affiliated with the Aguascalientes Boxing Commission. He was required to fill out a mandatory medical questionnaire for the RACJ.
Despite meeting with Zacarias Zapata twice before the fight, Dr. Sanchez failed to report her history of head trauma and concussion symptoms. Instead, he signed off on her fitness to fight.
When confronted with this omission, medical experts expressed outrage. “He left out critical information,” said Dr. Anabel Cervantes, a radiologist involved in the investigation. “This young woman should never have been allowed back in the ring.”
Fake Medical Reports Not an Isolated Case
During the investigation, authorities uncovered another alarming discovery—another boxer on the same fight card also had a falsified medical report. The document bore the name of the same fake radiologist who had cleared Zacarias Zapata.
This raised concerns about whether medical fraud in professional boxing was more widespread than previously thought. How many fighters have stepped into the ring under similar circumstances?
A Boxing Promoter’s Reaction

journaldemontreal.com | Dr. Sanchez, disregarding Zapata’s prior head injuries, falsely certified her fitness to fight.
Groupe Yvon Michel (GYM), the Quebec-based promotion company that organized the event, initially insisted that all required medical procedures were followed. However, after reviewing the new findings, the company’s president, Yvon Michel, expressed shock.
“This is beyond irresponsible,” he said. “These fighters were put in serious danger. The people responsible for this must be held accountable.”
Yet, the question remains—who is ultimately responsible? The RACJ claims that fight promoters should ensure the validity of medical documents, while promoters argue that verifying medical records is beyond their expertise.
Preventable Tragedy, Unanswered Questions
Neurologist Dr. Stéphane Ledoux, who analyzed Zacarias Zapata’s brain scans, confirmed what experts had feared. “Her brain was already damaged before she stepped into that ring. It was only a matter of time before something catastrophic happened.”
Had proper medical checks been conducted, had her history been fully disclosed, had the fraudulent reports been exposed earlier—this fight would have never taken place.
The Need for Urgent Reform
The death of Jeanette Zacarias Zapata is a harsh reminder of the risks athletes face when proper safety measures are ignored. It highlights serious gaps in the medical clearance process, the lack of accountability in professional boxing, and the urgent need for stricter regulations to protect fighters.
Her family continues to seek justice, hoping that no other athlete will suffer the same fate. “We can’t bring her back,” her father said. “But we can fight to make sure this never happens again.”
