Browns Lock Up Grant Delpit With $48M Extension as Cleveland Doubles Down on Defense
The Cleveland Browns have made another major investment in their defense. The team has signed veteran safety Grant Delpit to a three-year, $48 million contract extension that includes $35 million in guaranteed money. The agreement keeps one of Cleveland’s most reliable defenders under contract through the 2029 NFL season.
The extension came during training camp and arrived just one day after the Browns rewarded cornerback Denzel Ward with a new deal. Those back-to-back moves send a clear message. Cleveland wants to keep its best defensive players together as the franchise enters a new chapter.
Browns Continue to Build Around Their Defense

Delpit / IG / This contract shows the Browns remain committed to building a defense that can compete with the NFL’s best.
Even after major roster changes this offseason, the front office is making sure the secondary stays strong.
The timing is also important. Cleveland traded away star pass rusher Myles Garrett earlier this year, leaving a huge hole on defense. Keeping experienced leaders like Delpit and Ward gives the Browns stability while younger players grow into bigger roles.
Delpit has become one of the most dependable players on the roster. He lines up deep, plays near the line of scrimmage, covers receivers, and pressures quarterbacks when needed. That versatility gives the coaching staff plenty of options before every snap.
His football intelligence also stands out. Delpit recognizes offensive formations quickly and adjusts to changing situations during games. Those qualities make him valuable even when he is not recording tackles or interceptions.
The new contract averages $16 million per season. That salary places Delpit among the better-paid safeties in the league. Cleveland clearly believes he can continue producing at a high level over the next several seasons. The guaranteed money also speaks volumes. With $35 million locked into the deal, the Browns have shown complete confidence in their starting safety.
Grant Delpit Has Earned This Opportunity
Delpit’s NFL journey has not always been easy. His rookie season ended before it began after he suffered a serious Achilles injury during training camp. Many players struggle to return from that setback, but Delpit steadily rebuilt his career.
Since returning in 2021, the 27-year-old athlete has developed into one of Cleveland’s defensive leaders. Every season has brought more responsibility, and his performance has continued to improve. His consistency has earned the trust of coaches, teammates, and the front office.
Last season highlighted just how complete his game has become. Delpit finished with 89 total tackles, three sacks, one interception, four passes defended, two forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries. Those numbers reflect a player who contributes in every area of the defense.
The Browns originally selected Delpit in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft after his standout career at LSU. Despite missing his rookie season, he has built an impressive resume that includes more than 450 career tackles, seven interceptions, and several impact plays around the line of scrimmage.
What This Deal Means for Cleveland’s Future?

Delpit / IG / Keeping Delpit helps the entire secondary. His communication skills and versatility make life easier for cornerbacks and linebackers.
Strong safety play prevents big mistakes, and Cleveland values that consistency.
This extension also reflects how NFL teams value modern safeties. Today’s defenses ask players to cover receivers, stop the run, blitz quarterbacks, and make quick decisions. Delpit checks every one of those boxes, making him one of the most complete defensive backs on the roster.
His ability to move around the field creates matchup advantages. Opposing offenses cannot easily predict where he will line up before the snap. That flexibility gives defensive coaches more freedom to disguise coverages and pressure packages.
