Mikhail Torrance, Former Basketball Standout, Dies at 37

Mikhail Torrance, a former University of Alabama basketball standout who later built a successful career overseas, has died at the age of 37. The university confirmed the heartbreaking news, while fans and former teammates quickly shared tributes celebrating both his talent and character.

Born in Mobile, Alabama, Torrance played for the Crimson Tide from 2006 to 2010. During those four seasons, he earned a reputation as a skilled guard with strong leadership and impressive court vision. Although many expected him to enter the NBA, health concerns changed the course of his career.

Doctors discovered an enlarged heart before the 2010 NBA Draft, and teams passed on selecting him. Torrance later explained that basketball skills never caused concern. Instead, medical questions ended his NBA hopes despite strong workouts and positive feedback.

A Career That Refused to Stop

Even after facing that setback, Torrance kept chasing his dream. In 2010, he signed a professional contract in Israel. Sadly, he collapsed during a workout in Florida just weeks later and landed in critical condition.

Yet Torrance showed incredible determination. He recovered and returned to basketball, playing professionally in several countries from 2011 to 2015. His career included stops in Turkey, Canada, Finland, the Dominican Republic, and Mexico.

He also earned a four-day tryout with the Miami Heat. Although the organization did not offer a contract, Torrance continued proving his resilience throughout his career.

A Standout Season at Alabama

Torrance saved his best college season for last. During the 2009-10 campaign, he became a full-time starter and posted career-best numbers.

He averaged 15.6 points, 5.1 assists, and 3.7 rebounds per game. In addition, he led the SEC in free-throw percentage at .865 and earned Second-Team All-SEC honors.

Before college, Torrance also shined at Mary G. Montgomery High School in Eight Mile, Alabama. He received First-Team All-State recognition in both 2005 and 2006, which highlighted his promise long before his college success.
