In Latest Setback For Elon Musk, SpaceX’s Starship Explodes Mid-Flight

SpaceX loses another Starship in its latest test, with debris seen streaking across the sky. On Thursday evening, the massive spacecraft launched from SpaceX’s Starbase facility in Texas. This test, the eighth of its kind, aimed to push the vehicle’s capabilities further.
But just nine minutes after liftoff, things went wrong. Starship started spinning uncontrollably as several engines failed. Soon after, mission control lost contact. Moments later, the rocket exploded over the Caribbean, sending fiery debris across the region.
FAA Grounds Flights Over Debris Concerns
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) quickly took action. Concerned about falling wreckage, it temporarily grounded flights at major Florida airports, including Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Palm Beach, and Orlando. Air traffic stopped for nearly an hour before normal operations resumed.
While the explosion posed no immediate threat to people on the ground, the disruption showed how unpredictable these test flights can be.

ABN News / This failure closely mirrors a similar incident in January when another Starship prototype was lost. Back then, communication with the spacecraft was cut off shortly after takeoff.
The vehicle broke apart, and its remains fell into the Atlantic. In both cases, engine malfunctions led to loss of control, raising concerns about Starship’s reliability. SpaceX’s goal is to develop a fully reusable deep-space vehicle, but these repeated failures highlight how much work remains.
Super Heavy Booster Returns Successfully
Even with this setback, there were key successes. The Super Heavy booster, which forms the first stage of the Starship system, executed a flawless descent. This massive rocket stage detached from Starship, slowed down from supersonic speeds, and returned to the launch site.
Using giant robotic arms, the launch tower successfully caught the booster. SpaceX considers this one of the hardest parts of the mission, making its successful recovery a significant achievement.
FAA Investigation and Next Steps for SpaceX
The FAA is now requiring SpaceX to conduct a full investigation into what went wrong. The company must find the root cause of the failure and propose solutions before any further Starship launches. These steps ensure public safety and help prevent future explosions.
SpaceX has faced FAA investigations before, but each test offers valuable data that could improve the rocket’s design.

GTN / Elon Musk remains optimistic despite the crash. He sees the explosion as just another challenge to overcome.
The Tesla boss believes the next Starship prototype will be ready in a few weeks and that progress is measured over time, not by a single launch. SpaceX is known for its rapid innovation, and Musk’s confidence suggests they will push forward without slowing down.
Debris Falls Over the Caribbean
After the explosion, onlookers spotted debris falling over the Turks and Caicos Islands. The fiery streaks across the sky were a stark reminder of the risks involved in spaceflight. Fortunately, no injuries or property damage were reported. Safety measures in place ensured that the wreckage fell over open water rather than populated areas.
SpaceX continues to refine Starship’s design with each test. While this latest failure is a setback, it still brings them closer to achieving their goal. Every launch provides crucial data, even when things go wrong. SpaceX learns from each mishap, applying lessons to future flights.
This latest explosion highlights the challenges of developing a next-generation spacecraft. While the loss of another Starship is disappointing, the mission was not a total failure. The controlled return of the Super Heavy booster showed major progress in reusability.
