Why Drew Brees Thinks Bo Nix Could Be Sean Payton’s Dream QB

Bo Nix has a big fan in Drew Brees, and it is not just because they have thrown a few passes together. The Hall of Famer, who ran Sean Payton’s offense for 15 years in New Orleans, thinks Nix might be the perfect match for the Broncos’ new era.
Brees isn’t one to toss out praise without meaning it. When he speaks, especially about quarterbacks, people listen. And right now, he is putting serious weight behind Bo Nix as Sean Payton’s next big thing.
Nix, 25, is stepping into an offense that Brees knows inside and out. According to Brees, Payton’s playbook hasn’t changed at its core. It is still built on quick reads, precision routes, and adapting to defensive trends. But what makes it so tough to stop is how Payton customizes it to fit his quarterback.

Brees / IG / “Sean will make it as complicated as you can handle,” Brees says. And that is why he sees Bo Nix as the right guy.
After all, Nix is smart, coachable, and he has already shown in year one that he can handle pressure. Now in year two, with a better grasp of the NFL speed, he is expected to take a real leap.
Bo Nix’s Athleticism Opens More Doors
Bo Nix isn’t just a pocket passer. Brees pointed out something a lot of people overlook: Nix can run. And he does it well. “I don’t think he gets enough credit for how well he runs,” Brees said. That part of his game could become a major asset.
Sean Payton’s system has always leaned on timing and sharp execution, but in recent years, he has added more quarterback runs and rollouts. With Nix’s legs and natural movement, this offense can stretch defenses more than it has in the past. His mobility adds another layer to what Payton can draw up on Sundays.
Offseason Work With Brees Shows Nix’s Commitment
Bo Nix didn’t wait for training camp to get better. During the offseason, he spent nearly a week in San Diego working with Brees. It wasn’t just about throwing drills. They broke down film, talked through the offense, and mapped out how to handle the grind of an NFL season.
Sean Payton revealed that Nix was the one who set the whole thing up. That kind of initiative matters.

Nix / IG / Brees, who lived and breathed Payton’s system for over a decade, gave Nix all the insight he could. That knowledge transfer could be what turns a good quarterback into a great one.
Let’s not forget how good Bo Nix was last year. He threw for 3,775 yards and 29 touchdowns, with just 12 picks. That is a strong rookie season by any measure. It drew early comparisons to Brees himself, who made a name in a similar system with similar strengths.
Payton shut those comparisons down a bit, saying you don’t want to “discredit the athlete.” He is right. Nix is his own guy, and trying to clone Brees wouldn’t work anyway. But still, the overlap is hard to miss. Accuracy, decision-making, and poise – Nix has those tools, and he is learning how to sharpen them even more.
However, Nix didn’t stop with Brees. He also worked with Tom House, one of the best throwing coaches in the game. House has helped quarterbacks like Tom Brady and Drew Brees fine-tune everything from release angles to recovery.
