How Russia Is Using ‘Terrifying’ Fiber Optic Drones in Ukraine
In Ukraine, the battlefield is changing fast. Russian drones are not just flying cameras anymore, they are controlled by fiber optic cables that make them almost impossible to stop. These “ghost drones” are rewiring how this war is fought.
According to a new BBC report, Russian forces are using drones connected to long reels of fiber optic cable. That means no radio signals, no remote controls, just hardwired connections that electronic jamming can’t touch. For Ukrainian soldiers, it is a nightmare. Their usual tools to block drones simply don’t work here.
These fiber-linked drones give Russia a huge advantage. Ukrainian forces say the drones can sneak into buildings, scout hidden areas, and mark targets for attack. There is nowhere to hide. One soldier even joked about carrying scissors to cut the cables.

AJ News / According to early reports, Russian troops started using these drones earlier and more widely than Ukraine. That head start has made a real difference.
While Ukraine scrambles to catch up, Russia is already using them to guide deadly strikes and monitor troop movements with scary accuracy.
In fact, the presence of these drones is forcing Ukrainian soldiers to stay put in dangerous spots for longer. Rotations that used to last weeks are now stretched up to 120 days. The constant fear of being spotted makes every step risky. Troops are tired, mentally and physically, and the strain is showing.
Backed by these tech upgrades, Russia is also changing how its troops move. Instead of big attacks with rows of soldiers, they are using small groups on bikes and ATVs. These mobile teams slip through the lines, turning the front into a confusing mess. One Ukrainian officer called it a “chessboard,” with pieces from both sides scattered and mixed.
Meanwhile, Ukraine is racing to build its own fiber optic drones. But it is not a fair race. Russia has more time, more drones, and more practice. Ukrainian factories are working hard, but right now, they are still behind. That delay could cost lives.

E News / On top of the fiber optic drones, reports say that Russia is also hitting hard with glide bombs and massive drone swarms. The town of Rodynske saw a brutal wave of attacks.
Bombs tore through supply roads and smashed civilian buildings. Drones filled the sky, watching and waiting.
A Change in War Tactics
The effect on Ukrainian soldiers is crushing. Many are young, barely trained, and facing one of the most advanced armies in the world. One soldier named Maksym talked about the pain of being stuck at the front, away from his family, with drones buzzing overhead all day. The emotional toll is as sharp as the physical danger.
However, what is scary is how fast all this is changing. The rules of war are being rewritten in real time. Fiber optic drones are only one part of it. But they are already proving how one tool can reshape an entire fight. Ukraine needs more than courage now, it needs speed, innovation, and serious support.
Ukraine is trying to adapt. Engineers are studying the drones. Commanders are shifting tactics. But until they can match Russia’s scale and skill, every drone in the sky is a fresh risk.
