How Football Shaped Robby Snelling’s Path to His MLB Debut
Robby Snelling’s baseball journey reaches a major milestone this week as the talented left-hander prepares for his MLB debut with the Miami Marlins on May 8. Baseball fans now recognize him as one of the game’s most promising pitching prospects. However, his athletic rise started years earlier on both the football field and baseball diamond in Nevada.
The 22-year-old pitcher currently ranks as the No. 32 overall prospect in baseball, according to MLB Pipeline. He also stands as the No. 2 prospect in the Marlins organization. Miami acquired Snelling from the San Diego Padres in July 2024 as part of the trade package for reliever Tanner Scott.

Since joining the Marlins organization, Snelling has quickly rebuilt his value. He dominated Triple-A hitters during the opening stretch of the 2025 season while pitching for Jacksonville.
Through six starts, he posted a sharp 1.86 ERA and collected 44 strikeouts. Those numbers placed him among the top pitchers in the International League. Meanwhile, his command and confidence continued improving with every outing.
The Marlins clearly viewed his progress as a sign that he was ready for the next step.
Football Once Played a Major Role
Before baseball fully became his future, Snelling earned major attention as a football player at Reno McQueen High School.
He starred as both a linebacker and quarterback during his senior season. His athletic ability and leadership helped guide the school to the Nevada 5A State Championship game.
College football programs quickly noticed his talent. According to 247Sports Composite rankings, Snelling entered the 2022 recruiting class as a four-star linebacker. He also ranked among the nation’s top linebacker prospects.
Schools including Oregon, Auburn, Arizona State, and Arizona offered him scholarships.
Baseball Eventually Won the Battle

Even with football success, baseball remained impossible to overlook. Snelling became one of Nevada’s top high school baseball stars thanks to his dominance on the mound and power at the plate.
As a senior, he earned Gatorade Nevada Baseball Player of the Year honors after finishing with an 8-0 record and a 0.56 ERA. He also broke the Nevada single-season strikeout record with 146 strikeouts.
At the plate, he hit .450 and showcased his power during the 2021 All-Star High School Home Run Derby at Coors Field, where he launched 21 home runs. Meanwhile, his fastball touched 94 mph before graduation.
Snelling originally committed to Stanford before later choosing LSU. Still, professional baseball arrived before college ever started.
The Padres selected him with the 39th overall pick in the 2022 MLB Draft and signed him to a $3 million deal. Now, after years of development, the former multi-sport standout prepares for the biggest moment of his baseball career with the Miami Marlins.
