Nick Woltemade: The 6’6″ Playmaker Is No ‘Tall Camel’
The phrase “good feet for a big man” gets tossed around a lot in football. But with Nick Woltemade, it actually means something. At 6ft 6in (1.98m), the kid looks like your classic target man. But he plays like someone half his size with soft touches, tight control, and smart movement. People see the height and assume the worst. Big mistake.
The “tall camel” nickname? That came from some backroom staffer in Germany who took one look and figured he couldn’t play. Woltemade responded by scoring that day. That same story has followed him to England, and he is responding to it in the same way.
First Impressions Can Be Wrong
That camel comment stung, sure, but it lit a fire. Nick’s teammate that day told the critic to just wait. And Nick delivered. He always seems to. The people who judge him by size alone never see what is coming.
Fast forward to the Premier League, and not much has changed, except now the spotlight is brighter, and the stakes are higher. But Nick keeps making the same point: Don’t judge the player by the frame.

Nick / IG / The 23-year-old German footballer is huge, yes. But the ball doesn’t bounce off him. He brings it in, settles it, and gets moving.
That is not normal for someone that tall!
At Newcastle, he has already earned trust. Under pressure, he stays calm, turns, and finds teammates. He is completing over 82% of his passes. That is not a stat you expect from a striker built like a basketball forward. But Nick is no ordinary striker.
Nick Is a Connector, Not Just a Finisher
Woltemade is not glued to the box waiting for crosses. He drops deep, drags defenders with him, and links play. Plus, he creates space for others. He is the guy who makes a move that sets up the assist.
That works great when you have got pacey wingers like Anthony Gordon flying down the flanks. Nick feeds them early and often. Coaches and scouts have said there is no one quite like him, and they are not wrong.
People like Karl-Heinz Rummenigge scoffed when Newcastle paid £69 million for him. Called it stupid. Called them “idiots.” But Nick let his feet do the talking. Four goals in five starts. Not bad for a guy critics called a gimmick.

Nick / IG / The Premier League is a beast. And for someone Nick’s size, it is a grind. Defenders push and pull. The air battles are brutal.
Despite his height, Nick is winning less than 30% of his aerial duels. That stat doesn’t lie. He needs to get better up there.
And then there is the physical maintenance. He is naturally lean, which means keeping weight and muscle on is work. Additionally, he consumes between 3,500 and 4,000 calories a day to stay sharp.
It is essential to note here that Woltemade is only 21. Still raw, still growing. But his style is already mature. He doesn’t chase highlight moments. He keeps things moving. Above all, he thinks faster than defenders and plays with real control.
