Big Ten Basketball Power Rankings 2025. Can You Guess Who’s #1?
Big Ten basketball is once again the loudest, toughest, and deepest show in college hoops. The 2024-25 season was stacked with talent, chaos, and surprises. Purdue, Michigan, and Illinois rose above the noise, while other teams battled through tough breaks and bold rebuilds.
Here’s how every major player in the Big Ten stacks up heading into 2025-26.
Purdue
Even after losing Zach Edey, Purdue didn’t flinch. Braden Smith took full control, and Trey Kaufman-Renn became a monster in the paint. They made a Sweet 16 run, silencing anyone who thought the Boilermakers were cooked.
Matt Painter has kept the culture tight and tough. With Smith and Kaufman-Renn returning, plus another year of experience, Purdue isn’t just good, it is scary. Expect them to be a Final Four favorite next March.
Michigan
After a brutal stretch, new coach Dusty May flipped the switch for Michigan basketball. His frontcourt duo, Danny Wolf and Vlad Goldin, brought size, skill, and swagger. They didn’t just win, they punched their way into the Sweet 16.
May isn’t done. Michigan is reloading with elite transfers like Yaxel Lendeborg. They have got length, athleticism, and a fearless mindset. Big Ten basketball is better when Michigan is loud, and they are turning up the volume.
Illinois
Illinois lost its top eight scorers. Most teams crumble after that. Not the Illini. They found a gem in Kasparas Jakucionis, a projected NBA pick who played like a star from day one.

Illinois / IG / Illinois played fast, fearless, and with a chip on its shoulder. They weren’t supposed to matter, but they made it matter.
That is how Illinois rolls now. They are scrappy, smart, and seriously dangerous.
Michigan State
While the spotlight stayed on Purdue and Michigan, Michigan State just kept winning. Tom Izzo’s squad won the regular-season title and went to the Elite Eight. It was business as usual in East Lansing.
They weren’t flashy, just sharp. The team played tight defense, moved the ball well, and played with that classic Izzo edge. This wasn’t a hype-fueled squad; it was a well-oiled machine.
Maryland
Maryland came in with modest expectations but punched above its weight. They made a strong Sweet 16 run, thanks to a balanced roster and sharp coaching.
They didn’t have a superstar, but they didn’t need one. The team played smart, fast, and confidently. Maryland’s rise was one of the best stories in Big Ten basketball this year.
Northwestern
This team had the talent to go further, but got hit hard by injuries. Even so, they stayed in the fight and made it to the NCAA tournament.

Northwestern Basketball / IG / Northwestern never backed down. They played with grit, defended like mad, and showed serious toughness.
Give them a full squad, and they could have gone deeper.
Wisconsin
Wisconsin won 27 games and made people sweat all season. They were never the flashiest team on the court, but they knew how to close games.
They played physical, they played slow, and they controlled the tempo. That old-school grind wore teams down. They didn’t always look pretty, but they knew how to win.
UCLA
UCLA looked lost early. But credit to their coaching staff, because this team turned it around and found a rhythm late in the season.
They made the tournament and reminded everyone that talent doesn’t vanish overnight. Big Ten basketball isn’t easy, but UCLA earned its spot.
